The Virgin Islands Police Department responded to reports of a shark attack at Dorsch Beach around 4:28 p.m. local time. Arlene Lillis was identified as the victim, who lost an arm during the attack and later succumbed to her injuries. Christopher Carroll, a vacationer with nursing and lifeguarding experience, heard screams and rushed to assist, finding Lillis with severe injuries from what appeared to be a shark attack.
Emergency responders and fellow beachgoers provided aid until EMTs arrived. A search was conducted for a possible second victim, but no one else was found. Lillis's husband was located and informed of the tragedy. The community and government officials have expressed their condolences, emphasizing the need for strong emergency services and hospital infrastructure.
Dorsch Beach is located close to Frederiksted, a town that in the past was a duty-free shopping mecca for cruise ship passengers, and is known for calm waters. The area where the attack occurred was within the designated swimming area, but that did not prevent the shark encounter.
