Laken Riley Memorial 5K Honors Slain UGA Student

Laken Riley, a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student and former UGA student, was murdered while jogging on UGA’s campus on February 22, 2024. The tragedy drew significant attention, leading to the sentencing of Jose Ibarra to life in prison. In remembrance, the 'Run for Your Life' 5K was organized to celebrate Riley's life, faith, and the values she represented.

The event included a moment of silence, a memorial service, and the 5K run. Participants emphasized the importance of community, remembrance, and encouraging young women to pursue their goals despite fear. The Laken Riley Act, authored by U.S. Rep. Mike Collins, also played a role in discussions surrounding the event, addressing immigration and law enforcement concerns.

The Laken Hope Foundation will receive the majority of the funds raised, furthering its mission to support women's safety, nursing education, and children's healthcare initiatives. The University of Georgia has also committed $7.3 million in safety enhancements following Riley's murder.
