Celebrating America 250: Flag Displays and Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Makeover

The Isle of Palms Exchange Club and the local VFW Post 3137 collaborated to erect a patriotic display in honor of the United States’ 250th anniversary. The installation includes 26 versions of the American flag that have represented the nation throughout its 250 years.

The display begins with the Grand Union flag, or the Continental Colors, which bears the familiar red and white stripes with the Union Jack in the top left corner. The stars and stripes would officially become America’s banner in 1777. The 50-star flag that flies today was adopted in 1960 after Hawaii became the 50th state. The progression of the flag’s designs can be viewed on the Isle of Palms through July.

In Washington D.C., the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is undergoing renovations as part of an initiative to make Washington DC 'safe and beautiful' ahead of the nation's 250th birthday this summer. As part of that, contractors began work last week to paint the pool blue. Trump has said his project to restore and paint the monument would solve the leaking problem and make the pool more beautiful than ever. But it is unclear whether the repairs can specifically fix the underlying structural issues at the attraction, which was built in 1922.
