Four-Alarm Firefighters Battle Downtown Buffalo Blaze

The Buffalo Fire Department (BFD) faced a challenging situation when responding to the four-alarm fire on Church Street. The fire, which started on the second floor of 36 Church Street, quickly spread to the third floor and roof, necessitating a large-scale response.

Battalion Chief Patrick Lalley reported that crews had to withdraw from the building due to the intensity of the fire and structural concerns. The priority then shifted to containing the blaze and protecting adjacent buildings, particularly the historic Guaranty and Verizon Buildings.

Fire crews were strategically placed inside the Guaranty and Verizon Buildings, actively monitoring the walls and using live water lines to prevent any potential spread. This proactive approach proved crucial in safeguarding these landmarks.

The area surrounding Church Street between Delaware Avenue and Washington Street, and as far as Court Street and West Swan Street near County Hall, was cordoned off, and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz closed county buildings and courts as a precaution. By approximately 4 p.m., the fire was reported to be under control, with crews remaining on site to conduct overhaul operations and address any remaining hot spots.

The fire occurred at 36 Church Street in downtown Buffalo, in the Paul William Beltz Law office building.

The fire broke out on Thursday, May 1, 2025, just before 12:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported. Occupants in all three buildings self-evacuated.

The historic Guaranty and Verizon Buildings were nearby, and fire crews worked to protect them.
