Kootenai County Deputies and Firefighter Honored for Canfield Mountain Response

In June 2025, a tragic event unfolded on Canfield Mountain when a gunman ambushed first responders at the scene of a wildland fire. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in the deaths of two firefighters and injuries to others. Amidst the chaos and danger, Deputies Harvey Ballman, Arek Brock, and Josh Orr of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, along with Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Engineer David Tysdal, demonstrated extraordinary courage and dedication. Tysdal, even after being shot and paralyzed, heroically used his radio to warn others and provide crucial information about the shooter. The deputies, upon arriving at the scene, immediately formulated a rescue plan, successfully extracting the injured and rescuing those trapped, while also recovering the bodies of the fallen firefighters. Their actions were pivotal in saving lives and preventing further loss during this horrific incident. This event highlights the risks that first responders face daily and the importance of recognizing their bravery and selflessness. The medals of honor awarded to these individuals are a testament to their exceptional service and a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who protect our communities.
