The construction on National Avenue is a joint project between the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the City of Milwaukee. The project aims to improve infrastructure but has led to considerable disruption in the short term. Closures on National Avenue, specifically between South 27th and South 39th streets, have restricted traffic flow to westbound only. A key closure at the southeast corner of 35th Street is forcing northbound vehicles to take detours, adding time and complexity to commutes. This has resulted in increased traffic on residential streets like Scott Street, which are not designed to handle such volume. Residents like Vicki Eckhart have noted the difficulty in accessing local grocery stores due to the detours. The DOT recommends using the 511 system for up-to-date traffic information to help drivers navigate the closures effectively. Alternate routes include using Greenfield Avenue to Brewers Boulevard or 43rd Street, or to the Sixth Street Viaduct to cross northbound.

The project is expected to last until at least July.
