Pennsylvania Firefighters Killed in Crash During Search

The tragic incident took place on Saturday evening when Chief Jeff Buck and Assistant Chief Robert Shick were conducting a search for a missing 60-year-old woman. According to reports, Alexander Sepulveda-Rivera was driving erratically on Route 222 when his car swerved onto the shoulder and collided head-on with the firefighters' utility vehicle (UTV). Sepulveda-Rivera and a female passenger fled the scene but were later apprehended by police.

District Attorney John Adams stated that Sepulveda-Rivera will face charges including two counts of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. He is currently held in Berks County Jail due to outstanding warrants. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed against the passenger who fled the scene.

The community is deeply affected by the loss of Chief Buck and Assistant Chief Shick, who were long-time members of the Walnuttown Fire Company. A procession was held to honor the fallen firefighters as their bodies were returned to Berks County. Governor Josh Shapiro has ordered all Pennsylvania and U.S. flags on state facilities to be flown at half-staff until the date of interment.
