Power Outages Impact Durham and Raleigh

On Wednesday, a power outage in Durham affected 385 Duke Energy customers, primarily in the areas of N.C. Highway 55, South Alston Avenue, South Briggs Avenue, and Riddle Road. The outage initially impacted nearly 1,000 customers but was reduced as crews worked to restore power. The non-functioning traffic lights at the N.C. 55 and Riddle Road intersection created hazardous conditions, requiring drivers to treat it as a four-way stop. A Circle K gas station was also affected. According to WRAL News, the damage was caused by a broken power pole, with an estimated restoration time of 9:45 a.m.

In Raleigh, a separate incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when a tractor-trailer collided with power lines on Avent Ferry Road, near NC State University. This caused outages for over 900 customers. The utility pole fell onto a tree near Mission Valley Shopping Center after the truck driver pulled into a parking lot, bringing down the lines. The outage affected stop lights and impacted the National Weather Service, preventing them from transmitting radar data from Raleigh-Durham International Airport. No injuries were reported.
