Sacramento Cracks Down on Illegal Fireworks Ahead of July 4th

Sacramento's decision to increase penalties on illegal fireworks comes in response to a concerning rise in fire-related incidents and property damage during the Fourth of July celebrations. Last year, the city saw a significant spike in emergency calls, with fireworks causing fires at schools and parks.

The new ordinance targets both public and private properties. Setting off illegal fireworks on city-owned land will result in a $10,000 fine. Homeowners are also liable, with fines escalating for repeat offenses: $1,000 for the first violation, $2,500 for the second, and $5,000 for the third.

To enforce these regulations, a specialized task force will deploy drones, mirroring successful strategies used in other cities like Elk Grove. This initiative aims to deter illegal fireworks use and hold offenders accountable.

Councilmember Lisa Kaplan emphasized the need to prevent urban wildfires, referencing the recent fires in Los Angeles County as a cautionary example. The city's geographical location, at the convergence of two rivers and prone to windy conditions, increases the risk of fire spread.

Fines range from $1,000 to $5,000 for homeowners and up to $10,000 for using illegal fireworks on city property.

'Safe and Sane' fireworks are permitted from June 28 to July 4, between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.
