Two Men Die in Leverkusen Apartment Fire

The fire broke out in a multi-family building on Düsseldorfer Straße in the Opladen district of Leverkusen. Emergency services received the call just before midnight. Upon arrival, crews from both professional fire stations and several volunteer units found the third floor and attic ablaze, with heavy smoke filling the stairwell.

Around 80 firefighters and rescue personnel were involved in the challenging operation. They deployed three turntable ladders and entered the building to rescue trapped residents. One person had already sought refuge on a window ledge amidst dense smoke. In total, five people were brought to safety by the fire department, while another managed to escape with minor injuries before their arrival.

Despite immediate medical attention and resuscitation attempts, two men succumbed to their severe injuries at the scene. Three others were transported to St. Remigius Hospital with moderate injuries, including burns and suspected smoke inhalation. The fourth injured person suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters successfully prevented the flames from spreading to adjacent buildings. However, the fire and subsequent extinguishing efforts have rendered the affected house uninhabitable. The roof structure is considered at risk of collapse, and the building's overall structural integrity is under assessment. Uninjured residents are being cared for by the German Red Cross (DRK). Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The Düsseldorfer Straße remains closed in the area near the An St. Remigius intersection.
