Michael J. "Mike" Heusner, who passed away on January 10th at the age of 86, played a vital role in shaping Belize’s tourism industry. As the steward of Belize River Lodge, he promoted eco-tourism and sustainable sport fishing, attracting anglers and nature lovers to the country. Heusner’s advocacy for conservation extended to his involvement with organizations such as the Belize Audubon Society and the Fisheries Advisory Board. His efforts led to the protection of sportfishing species and improved practices for handling fish, integrating conservation into the tourism sector.

Dr. Francis Gary Longsworth, who also passed away recently, dedicated his career to advancing Belize’s health sector. As the former CEO of KHMH, he oversaw significant improvements to the hospital, including the development of the Neonatal-Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Longsworth’s commitment to healthcare extended beyond his administrative role, as he remained actively involved in national health and social services through his work with HelpAge Belize. His leadership and dedication have left a lasting impact on healthcare delivery in Belize.

Heusner was a pioneer in Belize’s eco-tourism and sport fishing industries, advocating for conservation and sustainable practices.

Longsworth served as the CEO of Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and improved institutional planning and development, including the creation of the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units.
