From Sandhurst to Sovereignty

Born in Doha in January 1952, Sheikh Hamad completed his early education in Qatar before attending the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, graduating in July 1971. He joined the Qatari armed forces and rose to the rank of Major General. In 1977, he was named Crown Prince and Minister of Defense.

The 1995 Transition

On June 27, 1995, Sheikh Hamad assumed power from his father, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani, in a bloodless transition supported by the armed forces and cabinet. This marked the beginning of a transformative era for the small but gas-rich emirate.

The 2013 Abdication

In a landmark move on June 25, 2013, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily abdicated in favor of his son, Sheikh Tamim. In his farewell address, he stated: *"You move to a new era where the banner is raised by a young leadership that puts the aspirations of future generations at the forefront."*
