Kashmir Weather: Summer Snowfall and Rainfall Disrupts Highlands

The Kashmir region is experiencing a climatic anomaly with summer snowfall and ongoing rainfall. The late-May snowstorm caught nomadic groups off guard, disrupting their seasonal migration to upper pastures. These groups, including Gujjar-Bakarwals and Chopans, depend on this migration for their livelihoods, as their livestock support local markets and dairies.

The unseasonal weather has damaged maize fields and caused livestock losses, adding pressure to an already vulnerable economy. According to veteran politician Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, immediate relief and respect for the traditional way of life are essential.

Adding to the challenges, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts, forecasting continued rainfall. An orange alert, indicating heavy rainfall, is in effect for Muzaffarabad, Bandipora, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Anantnag, and Kishtwar. A yellow alert, for moderate rainfall, covers Kupwara, Ganderbal, Srinagar, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Poonch, Mirpur, Jammu, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, and Doda.

Independent weather spotter Faizan Arif has cautioned about possible landslides and shooting stones on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

Margan, Warwan, Gurez, Peer ki Gali, and the slopes above Aharbal have been blanketed in snow.

Muzaffarabad, Bandipora, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Anantnag, and Kishtwar.

Moderate rainfall with temperatures between 14°C and 30°C.
