Future of East Potomac Golf Course Uncertain After Lease Termination

The termination of the National Links Trust's lease has ignited a debate about the future of East Potomac Golf Course. NLT CEO Mike McCartin stated the organization was surprised by the termination, disputing the government's claim that improvements were taking too long. He noted that NLT had invested $11 million in improvements, which they believed offset rent costs.

Preservationists and local golfers fear that potential renovations could lead to higher prices, effectively pricing out many regular players. Justin, a frequent golfer at East Potomac, emphasized the importance of affordability, while Jonathan Davis, who has played there for 40 years, wants to see improvements that don't compromise access.

The legal challenge brought by the D.C. Preservation League highlights concerns that the Trump administration's plans could violate the original congressional act establishing the park for public recreation. While the judge allowed preliminary work to continue, she cautioned against any major irreversible actions without proper notice and consideration.

The main concern is the potential for renovations that could increase prices and limit access for regular golfers, as well as the impact on the historical significance of the public course.

The National Links Trust was managing the East Potomac, Rock Creek, and Langston courses until the Department of the Interior terminated their lease in December 2025.

The D.C. Preservation League filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that reconstruction would violate the park's original purpose. An emergency request to halt work was denied, but the case is ongoing.
