Kings Island Revives Phantom Theater with Modern Upgrades

Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare is designed to be a comedic and fast-paced family adventure. The story begins on a dark and stormy night, setting the stage for the grand reopening of the haunted Phantom Theater. Inside, Maestro, the theater’s resident organist, is preparing for a long-awaited performance when a lightning strike unleashes the ghost notes from his pipe organ.

Riders will join head usher No Legs Larry and his team in “enchanted opera boxes” equipped with spellbound flashlights. Their mission is to capture the ghost notes and return them to the organ, ensuring the performance starts on time. The ride features 26 immersive scenes, including backstage areas, haunted hallways, dressing rooms, and a fiery boiler room. Along the way, guests will encounter animatronic characters like Houdelini, The Great Garbanzo, Hilda Bovine, Lionel Burymore, and a new addition, Arpeggio, Maestro’s feline companion.

The ride is a nostalgic nod to the original Phantom Theater and is created by Sally Dark Rides, a leader in family dark ride experiences. It promises surprises and thrills for all ages, combining multi-sensory effects, hidden Easter eggs, and a grand musical finale with the full cast.

Kings Island Park Manager, Tony Carovillano, stated that families who visited Kings Island will remember how special the original Phantom Theater was, and they've always wanted it to return. He added that while paying homage to the original ride, Phantom Theater: Opening Nightmare’s modern and advanced features will help create new memories and stories for all who take their seat inside this amazing experience.
