Dulles Airport Revitalization Plans Proposed

Dulles International Airport faces the challenge of modernizing its facilities while preserving its architectural heritage. Several firms have presented innovative solutions to address these issues. Ironbridge P3 Infrastructure proposed a $35-55 billion project to shift airport operations to a new terminal while preserving the Saarinen terminal as a museum. Ferrovial suggested an $18 billion redevelopment turning the Saarinen terminal into a departures lounge. Glydways proposed an underground network of autonomous electric vehicles to connect terminals. Investment firms Fengate Capital Management Ltd. and AltitudeX Aviation Group suggested updating existing concourses and adding a dedicated Head of State Terminal. These proposals reflect a range of approaches to revitalize Dulles Airport and improve passenger experience. The Art Deco Society of Washington and Docomomo DC have urged for the preservation of Saarinen’s work, emphasizing that modernization and preservation are not mutually exclusive.

The U.S. Department of Transportation requested proposals to address concerns about the airport's current state of disrepair and insufficient renovations.

Proposed changes include terminal redesigns, new transportation systems, wellness pods, and preservation of the Saarinen-designed main terminal.
