New Rajdhani Express Connects Mizoram to Delhi, Boosting Northeast Connectivity

The introduction of the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express represents a significant infrastructural achievement for Mizoram and the Northeast region. For decades, the North-East was considered a distant frontier, waiting for development. The railway line passes through challenging terrain, requiring innovative engineering solutions such as the Himalayan Tunnelling Method to stabilize soil and ensure the stability of bridges. This project not only enhances connectivity but also symbolizes the region's integration into India’s mainstream development narrative.

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line is an engineering marvel, featuring a large number of tunnels and bridges, including one bridge taller than the Qutub Minar. The railway line will improve living conditions and trade opportunities for the people of Mizoram. With the introduction of Rajdhani Express in Mizoram, travel time between Aizawl and Delhi will decrease by eight hours. The new Express trains will also make travel between Aizawl, Kolkata, and Guwahati faster and easier.

Farmers, especially those engaged in bamboo cultivation and horticulture, will be able to transport their produce faster and at lower cost to wider markets. The transport of essential commodities, such as food grains and fertilizers, will be easier. Tourism too will get a boost, as Mizoram’s natural beauty becomes more accessible. This will create opportunities for local businesses and youth. This project will also bring better access to education, health care, and employment for the people.

Historical Context: The first Rajdhani Express was introduced in 1969 between New Delhi and Howrah, aiming to connect state capitals to the national capital. This new line to Mizoram continues that legacy, addressing regional connectivity disparities.

The train will run thrice a week.

The train is expected to cover the distance in less than 44 hours.
