In August 2022, Salman Rushdie was attacked on stage at a literary event in Chautauqua, New York. Footage of the attack was also shown, depicting Matar approaching Rushdie from behind and repeatedly stabbing him until being subdued by witnesses. Matar faces additional federal charges related to terrorism, as authorities believe he was attempting to carry out the decades-old fatwa. He has pleaded not guilty to providing material support to terrorists and engaging in terrorism transcending national boundaries.

Hadi Matar was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the attempted murder of Salman Rushdie and seven years for wounding Ralph Henry Reese, to be served concurrently.

Rushdie suffered 15 stab wounds, resulting in the loss of his right eye, nerve damage, and liver damage.

Matar claimed Rushdie disrespected others and cited the 1989 fatwa against Rushdie as a factor.
