Arctic Blast Brings Freezing Temperatures to NYC and Long Island

New York City is implementing its 'Code Blue' initiative, which focuses on providing shelter and outreach to the city's homeless population during this period of intense cold. Residents are encouraged to call 311 if they see someone in need of shelter.

Long Island is under a freeze warning, with temperatures expected to drop below freezing. Residents are advised to protect sensitive plants and take precautions to stay warm. Nassau County has opened a warming center at 1200 Old Country Road in Westbury, and the Nassau County Winter Homeless Hotline is available at 1-866-WARMBED.

The polar vortex, a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth's poles, has expanded, sending arctic air southward. This phenomenon is responsible for the unseasonably cold temperatures affecting the region. While temperatures are expected to rise slightly mid-week, residents should remain prepared for fluctuating conditions.

A Code Blue is activated when temperatures are forecasted to drop to 32 degrees or lower, triggering increased outreach to homeless individuals and providing access to shelters.

If you see a homeless person in the cold, call 311, and an outreach team will be dispatched.
