The Colorado mountains are bracing for two significant snowstorms as April comes to a close. According to OpenSnow, the first storm is expected around April 26-27, followed by another around April 30-May 1. These systems could bring substantial snow accumulations, with OpenSnow predicting up to 17 inches for Arapahoe Basin and 13 inches for Copper Mountain. Temperatures will remain cool through the end of April.

The National Weather Service has not issued a winter advisory but forecasts chances of snow every day from April 26 to May 1. While Loveland and Breckenridge are closing soon, Copper Mountain and Arapahoe Basin plan to remain open into early May, weather permitting.

The snow-rain line is expected to be around 8,000-9,000 feet elevation, meaning rain for lower areas and a mix of rain and snow or just snow at higher elevations like the ski resorts. Most of Summit County is above 9,000 feet.

Travelers should anticipate traffic impacts and be prepared for chain and traction laws on mountain passes. A previous spring snowstorm resulted in a 70-plus vehicle pile-up on Interstate 70.
