Nebraska Braces for Sub-Zero Temperatures: State of Emergency Declared, Schools and Businesses Closed

Governor Jim Pillen has declared a state of emergency, effective immediately until February 27, to ensure sufficient power supply during the sub-zero temperatures.

Many school districts and businesses in Omaha and Lincoln are closed on Friday due to the dangerously cold temperatures. These include Lincoln Public Schools, Omaha Public Schools, Bellevue Public Schools, and many others.

Wind chill values are expected to drop as low as -20 to -35 degrees, creating a high risk of frostbite in as little as 15-25 minutes.

The Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and the Nebraska Humane Society will be closed on Friday.

Extreme shivering, confusion, drowsiness and stiff muscles are signs of hypothermia, and require immediate relocation to a warm area and potentially warm liquids.

Stay Indoors: Limit outdoor activities as much as possible.

Dress Warmly: Wear layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing. Cover exposed skin when outdoors.

Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure elderly neighbors, relatives, and those without adequate heating are safe.

Prepare Your Home: Insulate pipes and allow faucets to drip to prevent freezing.

Have an Emergency Kit: Include blankets, flashlights, extra batteries, and a supply of non-perishable food and water.
