Prince William County Schools Announce Code Green for January 29

The decision to close PWCS reflects a balance between ensuring student safety and providing essential support. Superintendent McDade emphasized the critical role schools play in providing resources and care, especially for economically disadvantaged students. The Code Green status means that while schools are closed to students, classified employees and division administrators are required to report to work.

The distribution of free meal kits highlights the school division's commitment to addressing food insecurity during closures. This initiative, supported by the USDA Summer Food Service Program and the Child and Adult Care Food Program, aims to provide nutritional support to children up to age 18.

Other districts in Northern Virginia, such as Arlington and Fairfax, also opted for closures or staff development days, indicating a region-wide response to the weather conditions. Fauquier and Culpeper County Public Schools announced closures for both Thursday and Friday.

Meal kits will be distributed at Fred Lynn Middle School, Hampton Middle School, and Unity Braxton Middle School from 12-3 p.m.

The primary reason was concerns about uncleared neighborhood walkways, posing safety risks to students.
