Rochester Region Grapples with Flooding After Heavy Rainfall

Recent heavy rainfall has led to overflowing rivers and creeks throughout the Rochester region. Honeoye Creek flooded yards and fields in Honeoye Falls and Lima. Irondequoit Creek caused extensive flooding in Ellison Park in Penfield, submerging roads and ball fields. The Genesee River is running high in Letchworth State Park due to the increased water volume. In the aftermath of severe thunderstorms, many basements in the Rochester area experienced flooding. Fire departments and plumbing services were inundated with calls to pump out water. Several creeks are under flood warnings due to continued runoff. Tonawanda Creek is expected to crest at moderate flood stage, potentially backing up into smaller creeks. Ellicott Creek is predicted to cause minor flooding, while Oatka Creek is already receding after reaching its crest. The flooding has highlighted the vulnerability of homes near wetlands and low-lying areas, emphasizing the need for effective water management and infrastructure.

Areas along Honeoye Creek, Irondequoit Creek, and the Genesee River, as well as those near Tonawanda, Ellicott, Black, and Oatka creeks, are experiencing the most significant flooding.

Flood warnings remain in effect across the Southern Tier through Thursday morning, April 2, 2026. Some creeks may not return to below flood stage until early Saturday morning.
