Severe Thunderstorms Impact Central and Eastern Oregon

On August 3, 2025, central and eastern Oregon experienced severe thunderstorms that led to property damage and power outages. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings throughout the afternoon. One warning, issued for Bend at 2:50 p.m., indicated a storm moving north at 20 mph with the potential for 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail. Another warning was issued for an area 30 miles north of John Day at 3:22 p.m., followed by a third warning for southwestern Deschutes County at 3:33 p.m. NWS Pendleton warned of potential hail damage to vehicles and wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. A wind gust of 62 mph was reported in Malheur County at 1:50 p.m. In addition to the severe storms, isolated dry thunderstorms were also a concern due to the risk of strong, gusty winds and potential fire hazards. The Storm Prediction Center had placed most of the region east of the Cascades under a marginal risk for severe storms. Due to the storm, a shelter in place was announced at the Deschutes Co. Fair and Rodeo.
