Tornado Warnings Lifted for Carolinas, Upstate & WNC

On March 16, 2026, severe weather swept through the Carolinas, leading to tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm watches. The storms developed ahead of a cold front, posing threats such as damaging straight-line winds, isolated tornadoes, large hail, and heavy rain. The WCNC Charlotte Weather Impact Team emphasized the risk of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes, particularly in areas east of Charlotte. Weather services issued alerts and safety guidelines, urging residents to seek shelter and stay informed through multiple channels, including wireless emergency alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, and local news apps. The focus was on preparedness and awareness, highlighting the importance of having a severe weather plan in place.

Multiple rounds of strong-to-severe storms overnight through Monday impacted the Charlotte area. The highest risk for strong storms remained late Monday morning, midday and early afternoon as the cold front approached. Areas east of Charlotte, including Anson and Richmond counties, were at greater risk for severe weather due to the timing of the storms. Straight-line winds cause 90% of the damage from thunderstorms. The setup also supported isolated tornadoes, particularly a few rotating supercell storms developing with the warm front, and tornadoes could also develop within the squall line as it moved through by Monday afternoon.

A tornado warning is issued when a tornado is indicated by radar or sighted by weather spotters, prompting immediate shelter.

A tornado watch is issued when conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area.
