Xcel Energy Warns of Potential Power Outages in Denver Metro Area Due to High Fire Risk

The combination of strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation has created a critical fire weather situation in the Front Range and eastern plains of Colorado. Xcel Energy is closely monitoring the situation and has implemented safety measures to mitigate the risk of wildfires. The activation of EPSS means that even minor disturbances to power lines, such as a tree branch touching a line, can trigger a shutdown. While this enhances safety, it may also lead to longer power outages as crews need to visually inspect the lines before restoring power.

Residents should take proactive steps to prepare for potential outages, including assembling an emergency kit with essential supplies like a battery-powered radio, flashlights, batteries, and backup phone chargers. It's also advisable to have a phone that doesn't require electricity and a non-electric alarm clock.

A PSPS is a temporary shutdown of power implemented by Xcel Energy to prevent wildfires during periods of high risk.

Adams, Boulder, Jefferson, Denver, Arapahoe, and Larimer counties were initially under consideration for shutoffs, though proactive shutoffs were later called off. However, residents in these counties may still experience outages due to strong winds.
