Increased Terror Threat in Germany Due to Iran War

Following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Western intelligence agencies are closely monitoring potential retaliatory actions by Iran and its proxy groups. Germany, in particular, is on high alert due to its existing networks of Iranian nationals and the potential for sleeper cell activation. Marc Henrichmann, of the German parliament's Intelligence Oversight Committee, warned that the attacks won't stay isolated to the Middle-East. He told Süddeutsche Zeitung: “The escalation in the Middle East doesn’t just affect the region itself. The Iranian regime has repeatedly demonstrated in the past that it carried out its terror beyond its own borders.” The New York Times reported that US government officials noted an increase in electronic intercepts of terrorists’ communications, suggesting potential attack planning. This includes concerns that the Houthis in Yemen could attack Western shipping in the Red Sea and that Hezbollah or Al Qaeda could target American interests in Europe.

In May 2025, UK authorities foiled a major terror attack involving Iranian nationals, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by Iranian-linked operatives. This incident, along with reports of Iran recruiting agents in the UK for underground missions, underscores the need for heightened vigilance and proactive security measures across Europe.
