Suspects, later identified as Bulgarian nationals, fled the scene in a Peugeot 5008 and entered the A-7 motorway driving on the wrong side of the road in an attempt to evade capture. The fleeing vehicle collided head-on with an off-duty police officer's car near Torremolinos.

The officer, identified as Antonio, a member of the Gotham Group, a special branch of the Spanish police, was driving home after his shift. The impact resulted in both vehicles catching fire, causing the immediate death of all four individuals involved.

The suspects are believed to be linked to at least 13 pharmacy robberies along the Costa del Sol over the past three months. They often targeted pharmacies at night, using stolen tools to force entry and steal cash registers. Tools found in the vehicle were traced back to thefts from two fire stations.
