Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang Pleads Guilty to Acting as Chinese Agent

Eileen Wang’s case highlights the ongoing concerns about foreign influence in U.S. politics. According to court filings, Wang and Sun “executed directives” from Chinese government officials, posting requested articles and reporting back with screenshots showing how many people viewed the stories. This activity raises questions about the extent of foreign governments' efforts to infiltrate and influence local politics.

The U.S. News Center website, which Wang helped run, branded itself as a news source for Chinese Americans. However, prosecutors say the site was used to spread propaganda, including content that denied human rights abuses in Xinjiang. Wang also edited articles at the request of officials and shared information showing the reach of the posts.

Yaoning “Mike” Sun, Wang’s former fiancé, was sentenced in February to four years in federal prison for acting as an illegal agent of the People’s Republic of China. Prosecutors accused Sun and his Chinese government contacts of cultivating Wang in hopes that she would rise in politics and help them strengthen China’s influence in California.

Eileen Wang was charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China.

The website was allegedly used to disseminate Chinese government propaganda, including articles denying Uyghur persecution in Xinjiang.
