Texas Senate Democratic Primary Heats Up

A recent poll by Texas Public Opinion Research surveyed 1,290 likely Democratic primary voters between January 14 and January 21. The results show Jasmine Crockett leading James Talarico by a single percentage point, with 21% of voters still undecided. This contrasts with earlier polls, some of which had Talarico ahead.

The candidates are vying to take on the Republican nominee in November. Incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn faces primary challenges from Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt.

The poll also explored voter perceptions of the path to victory in November, with 88% saying it was important for the Democratic nominee to win over voters who previously supported Donald Trump. Talarico was seen as slightly more likely to beat a Republican in November, while Crockett was seen as more likely to energize the Democratic base.

Also, recent comments from State Rep. James Talarico frame Democratic successes in Texas as a direct response to perceived extremism.

The race is extremely tight, with Crockett and Talarico statistically tied.

Crockett leads among Black, non-college-educated, and middle-aged voters, while Talarico leads among white, Latino, and college-educated voters.

Talarico attributes these wins to a "backlash to extremism."
