Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Faces Ethics Trial Over FEMA Funds Misuse

The House Ethics Committee has been investigating Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick for months, reviewing over 33,000 documents and interviewing 28 witnesses. The investigation found substantial evidence of conduct consistent with the indictment allegations, including the misuse of nearly $5.8 million in overpaid funds. According to the indictment, a Florida state agency mistakenly deposited $5 million into Trinity Healthcare Services, owned by the congresswoman's family. Instead of returning the funds, Cherfilus-McCormick and her brother allegedly moved the money to other bank accounts to disguise its source. Over $1.1 million was then transferred to accounts connected to her congressional campaign. Prosecutors also allege that Cherfilus-McCormick used the funds to purchase luxury items and reduce her tax liability. Republican Rep. Greg Steube is leading an effort to expel Cherfilus-McCormick from Congress, though expulsion requires a two-thirds vote. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has stated that Cherfilus-McCormick is entitled to her day in court and the presumption of innocence.

She faces 15 counts, including theft of government funds, money laundering, and making false statements on a tax return.

She faces a maximum of 53 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

They are holding a public hearing to determine if the allegations against her are supported by clear and convincing evidence.
