White House Revives COVID-19 Lab Leak Theory on New Website

The new White House website echoes a final report issued last year by the Republican-led House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic. The site details perceived failures of the Covid-19 response, including lockdowns, mask mandates, and infectious disease research funding. This initiative reflects a broader effort to scrutinize the origins of COVID-19 and the response to the pandemic. The redirection of Covid.gov to this new site signals a significant shift in the government's communication strategy regarding the virus. The previous version of the site included information on how to order free COVID tests and described how to stay up to date with your COVID-19 vaccine, saying it’s “the best way you can protect you and your loved ones.” It advised people how to get treatment right away if they get sick and added links to learn more information about long COVID.

The website champions the theory that the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 was a manmade pathogen that leaked from an infectious disease laboratory in Wuhan, China.

It provided information about vaccines, testing, treatment, and staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations.

Many scientists believe, based on analyses of the virus and early cases, that the virus occurred naturally in animals and spread to humans in an outbreak at the Wuhan market. They’ve also said that the origin of the virus may never be proven.
