Indianapolis 500 Practice Sees Big Crash and Newgarden Leads

During Monday's practice session for the Indianapolis 500, Alexander Rossi’s car spun in Turn 2, leading to a collision with Pato O'Ward and Romain Grosjean, all while drivers were attempting to maximize their time on the track before impending rain. Rossi made hard contact with the SAFER Barrier, and O’Ward, trying to avoid Rossi, also spun into the wreck. Grosjean also spun, hitting the SAFER Barrier. Despite the severity of the crash, O’Ward and Grosjean were quickly cleared, while Rossi was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. He was reported to be in good spirits.

Josef Newgarden, who had a disappointing qualifying session, led the practice with a speed of 226.198 mph. Takuma Sato, Dennis Hauger, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Marcus Ericsson rounded out the top five. The session was shortened from two hours to one hour and 18 minutes due to weather conditions. A total of 1,053 laps were completed by all 33 drivers despite the limited time.
