Anaheim Mayor Pushes for New Angels Stadium Deal, Wants Name Change

The relationship between the city of Anaheim and the Angels has been complex regarding the future of Angel Stadium. Mayor Ashleigh Aitken's recent open letter aims to restart dialogue after years of stalled progress and collapsed agreements. The context includes a 2013 proposal that faltered over land value disputes and a 2019 deal approved by the city council but later cancelled in 2022 following an FBI investigation into former Mayor Harry Sidhu's actions during negotiations. Sidhu was later sentenced for actions related to passing confidential information to the Angels.

The current stadium lease runs through 2032 (extendable to 2038), giving the Angels control but providing little long-term certainty or revenue for Anaheim, as the team plays rent-free due to paying for renovations in 1996. The city hasn't capitalized on developing the surrounding parking lots, missing out on potential tax revenue that other teams, like the Atlanta Braves with their Battery development, have successfully generated.

Any new land deal or sale would likely be subject to California's Surplus Land Act, prioritizing affordable housing, which adds another layer of complexity discussed in briefings with the team. While Mayor Aitken strongly desires the 'Anaheim Angels' name restoration, owner Arte Moreno previously rejected this demand. The city faces financial pressures, with projected deficits, making a beneficial stadium deal crucial, yet Moreno holds significant leverage with the current lease structure.

Decades of negotiations for renovation or replacement have failed, the current lease doesn't guarantee a long-term stay or needed upgrades, and two major development deals collapsed amid controversy and political shifts.

Mayor Aitken seeks a new agreement that benefits the city financially, secures the Angels' presence in Anaheim long-term, potentially develops the stadium area, and restores 'Anaheim' to the team's official name.

While the mayor is pushing for it as a high priority, owner Arte Moreno previously refused this change during negotiations in 2019, and his willingness now is uncertain.
