Umpire and Sheriff’s Deputy Coach Brawl at Youth Baseball Game

The incident occurred after a game in the Grand Slam baseball tournament at Cornerstone Park. According to reports, Darrell Holley, coaching a 14U team, initiated the fight with umpire Jeff Akins following a game. Video evidence shows Holley seemingly elbowing Akins, who retaliated, leading to a series of punches exchanged between the two. Holley’s son also became involved, further escalating the situation. Sheriff Shank Phelps of the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office released a statement emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for such conduct, resulting in Holley’s termination. Tournament director Mike Narmour expressed strong disapproval, highlighting the negative impact on youth sports and implementing a zero-tolerance policy for arguing with umpires in future tournaments. Mayor Lynn Spruill of Starkville also conveyed her disappointment, stressing that such behavior is unacceptable at city-owned parks.

Both Darrell Holley and Jeff Akins were charged with misdemeanor fighting.
