The introduction of this policy follows controversy surrounding Imane Khelif, whose eligibility to compete in the women's category was questioned at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Despite previous disputes and having been cleared to compete in the Olympics, Khelif must now undergo testing to participate in future World Boxing events, including the Eindhoven Box Cup. This move by World Boxing aims to provide clarity and assurance regarding the biological sex of competitors, ensuring a fair and safe environment for all athletes. While Khelif has stated that she identifies and has lived as a woman her entire life, the new regulations will require her to prove her eligibility through genetic testing.
