Leça FC Leads the April Fools' Charge
Leça Futebol Clube, a historic club founded in 1912 currently competing for promotion to Portugal's second division, masterminded a notable April Fools' prank. On April 1st, the club posted on its official social media channels: *"Bienvenue, @paulpogba! The athlete arrives at Leça FC on a permanent deal."* They even shared mock images of Pogba signing a contract and announced French baguettes would be sold at their next match in his honor. This lighthearted stunt quickly gained traction online.
The timing was key, as Paul Pogba, the 2018 World Cup winner with France, recently became eligible to play again. He had been serving an 18-month suspension following a positive test for testosterone while at Juventus in August 2023. Although his initial ban was four years, it was reduced, allowing a potential return to the pitch from April 2025. Despite his availability, Pogba's next career move remains uncertain, with rumors even linking him to Brazilian club Corinthians – though these remain unconfirmed.

Leça FC wasn't alone. AD Sanjoanense, a roller hockey club, announced their coach Reinaldo Ventura was leaving for a lucrative opportunity in Saudi Arabia to develop the sport there. Similarly, a basketball news source circulated a story about Portuguese NBA player Neemias Queta swapping the Boston Celtics for Real Madrid – another fabrication for the day.
