The DFB-Pokal semi-final between VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening concluded not just with Leipzig's elimination from the competition, but also with concerning scenes of violence. Reports indicate the initial spark involved an alleged robbery linked to a sticker from Lok Leipzig, a local rival of RB Leipzig, highlighting how deep-seated club rivalries can fuel confrontations.
When security personnel and police attempted to intervene, the situation reportedly intensified. Fans allegedly armed themselves with flagpoles, leading to direct clashes with authorities. The police response included the use of force (batons and pepper spray) and resulted in the temporary detention of 107 individuals to de-escalate the situation and identify participants.
While most detainees were released later that night, investigations have been launched against approximately 15 individuals. The potential charges are serious, including robbery, assault on law enforcement officers, breach of the peace, and bodily harm. Additionally, reports mentioned fireworks being set off within the stadium during the event.
This incident doesn't appear isolated. RB Leipzig fans were involved in recent disturbances during and after an away match in Mönchengladbach, where clashes occurred at the train station and the team's fan train was later attacked with a foul-smelling substance. RB Leipzig acknowledged the Stuttgart events, emphasizing that violence is unacceptable and promising cooperation with the investigation while reserving the right to impose club sanctions.
