The death of beloved footballer Kevin Campbell sent shockwaves through the football community. Known affectionately as 'Super Kev', Campbell enjoyed a successful career, winning major trophies with Arsenal, achieving promotion with Nottingham Forest, and playing key roles in Premier League survival campaigns for Everton and West Bromwich Albion.
His passing on June 15, 2024, following a short, severe illness, left many unanswered questions for his family, including his son, Sheffield United player Tyrese Campbell. The family's pursuit of answers led them to seek legal counsel, focusing on the care Campbell received during multiple hospital admissions between January and June 2024.
An initial pre-inquest hearing revealed that the hospital trust (MFT) had conducted a mortality review which deemed Campbell's death 'possibly avoidable', citing delays in review by specialists and a subsequent delayed diagnosis of infective endocarditis. The family's legal team argued for independent expert analysis, particularly from a cardiologist, and requested the inquest examine care received at Salford Royal Hospital prior to his final admission at MRI, questioning if an earlier diagnosis might have been possible.
However, Coroner Zak Golombeck denied these requests, expressing confidence in the internal review's independence and the duty of candour owed by witnesses to the court. He emphasized that an inquest is a fact-finding exercise, distinct from civil proceedings. Reports indicate the family and their legal team have since parted ways, and their participation level in the upcoming April 14th inquest hearing is uncertain.
Tributes continue for Campbell, with fans at the recent Everton vs. Arsenal match (two of his former clubs) participating in a ninth-minute applause in his honour.
