Rocket Classic: Record-Breaking Scores at Detroit Golf Club

The first day of the Rocket Classic saw Detroit Golf Club yield record-breaking scores, primarily due to softened conditions from early-week rain. Aldrich Potgieter and Kevin Roy seized the opportunity, each firing a 10-under 62 to set a new course record. Potgieter, a 20-year-old rookie from South Africa, and Roy, a 35-year-old veteran, outshone established players like Min Woo Lee, whose 63 was also a career-best.

Potgieter's round included an impressive 29 on his back nine, featuring five birdies and an eagle. Roy matched the eagle on the 17th and added four birdies on the back nine for a 30. Lee, despite his strong start, acknowledged the friendly nature of the Detroit Golf Club, which allowed for more aggressive play compared to tougher courses like Oakmont.

Andrew Putnam also had a notable performance, carding an 8-under 64 with nine birdies. The softened conditions and lack of wind made the course highly gettable, leading to a crowded leaderboard with numerous players under par.

The tournament record of 26-under, set by Tony Finau in 2022, is now under threat, with players expressing enthusiasm for the accessible course conditions. This year's Rocket Classic promises to be a high-scoring affair, with both seasoned players and newcomers vying for the title.
