The Xcel Energy Center, a cornerstone of downtown St. Paul, is undergoing a significant renovation to maintain its competitive edge and enhance the fan experience. The initial proposal for a $769 million renovation of the entire Xcel Energy Center Complex, including the Roy Wilkins Auditorium and RiverCentre, faced resistance from legislators due to budget constraints and competing funding requests.
In response, St. Paul city officials and the Minnesota Wild revised their plans to focus solely on the arena, reducing the request to $488 million. This revised proposal allocates $200 million from St. Paul and local partners, with the Wild covering the remaining costs and any overruns. The state's contribution will fund essential upgrades to improve accessibility, security, and infrastructure.
The renovations include expanding the north wall along 5th Street to enhance security and accessibility, updating restroom plumbing, and reducing congestion in corridors. Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold emphasized the need to modernize the arena to compete with other NHL venues and entertainment options. He highlighted plans to change concessions and seating, creating more open spaces for fans.
Rising construction costs and tariffs have added urgency to the project. Despite the reduced scope, the city intends to seek funding for future renovations of the Roy Wilkins Auditorium and St. Paul RiverCentre. Mayor Melvin Carter emphasized the importance of investing in the future to create jobs, stabilize taxpayer-funded facilities, and boost downtown St. Paul.
