Cal Raleigh Crushes 40th Homer, Enters MVP Conversation

Cal Raleigh's 40th home run of the season not only secured a win for the Seattle Mariners against the Los Angeles Angels but also marked several significant milestones in his career and MLB history. The solo shot, a 416-foot blast off José Fermín, broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and propelled the Mariners to a 7-2 victory. This achievement makes Raleigh the first switch-hitter to reach the 40-homer mark before August, surpassing Mickey Mantle's previous record. 

Raleigh also joins an elite group of catchers who have hit 40 or more home runs in a season, including Mike Piazza, Johnny Bench, and Salvador Perez. His performance is particularly notable considering his recent slump, where he had been batting .169 over the past 19 games. Despite this, his ability to deliver in crucial moments has made him a key player for the Mariners.

Adding to the Mariners' offensive firepower, Julio Rodríguez continued his hot streak with his fourth home run in three games, and Randy Arozarena hit his 20th homer of the season. George Kirby pitched six strong innings, striking out nine and earning his fourth win in five starts.

The Mariners' win, combined with the Houston Astros' loss, allowed them to gain ground in the AL West standings. With Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees landing on the injured list, Raleigh's MVP case is gaining momentum, positioning him as a strong contender for the award.

Cal Raleigh is the fifth Mariner to hit 40 home runs in a season, joining Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Nelson Cruz, and Jay Buhner.

He became the first switch-hitter to reach 40 home runs before August and surpassed Ken Griffey Jr. for the most home runs by a Mariner in his first five seasons.
