Dodgers Rotation Struggles Amid Injury Crisis in 2025

The Dodgers' pitching staff has been decimated by injuries in 2025, forcing the team to rely on depth and internal options. Tony Gonsolin's recent elbow discomfort led to an MRI, which thankfully showed no new damage to his UCL. However, he remains sidelined, adding to the long list of injured Dodgers pitchers. Manager Dave Roberts indicated that the cause of Gonsolin's elbow pain could be scar tissue or inflammation.

Among the injured are front-line starters like Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell, as well as promising young arms like Emmet Sheehan and River Ryan, all recovering from significant injuries. Shohei Ohtani is also working his way back to the mound.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, and Justin Wrobleski currently lead the rotation. Veteran José Ureña provides bullpen support with starting experience. Options in Triple-A include Landon Knack, Bobby Miller, Nick Frasso, and Matt Sauer, though some have struggled in the minors.

Despite these challenges, GM Brandon Gomes remains optimistic about the team's internal pitching depth, suggesting they may not need to acquire external starting pitching before the trade deadline. However, he acknowledged that further injuries could change this stance.

Emmet Sheehan is progressing well in his rehab assignment, offering a potential boost to the rotation soon. His fastball velocity is reportedly up from pre-surgery levels, a promising sign for his return. He is expected to make at least one or two more rehab starts before being considered for the big league club.

An MRI showed that his UCL is intact, but he is on the injured list with elbow discomfort and there is no timetable for his return.

There are currently eight starting pitchers on the injured list: Tony Gonsolin, Tyler Glasnow, Michael Grove, Kyle Hurt, River Ryan, Roki Sasaki, Emmet Sheehan, Blake Snell and Gavin Stone.

Emmet Sheehan is progressing well in his rehab assignment and could rejoin the Dodgers' starting rotation before the end of the month.
