Forrest Whitley Activated: Will This Be His Breakout Year?

Forrest Whitley's journey to the majors has been anything but smooth. Drafted in the first round in 2016, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of baseball's top prospects. However, a 50-game suspension for violating MiLB's drug policy, coupled with shoulder issues, Tommy John surgery, and the canceled 2020 minor league season, derailed his progress.

After struggling in his return to the mound in 2022 and 2023, Whitley made his MLB debut in 2024, pitching three scoreless innings. A bone bruise in his left knee sidelined him this spring, but he's now healthy and ready to contribute. Moving to the bullpen full-time may help minimize injury risk and allow him to focus on maximizing his velocity and strikeout ability.

Whitley's success will depend on his ability to improve his control. During his recent rehab assignment, he struck out a high percentage of batters but also walked a significant number. If he can harness his stuff and throw more strikes, he has the potential to become a valuable high-leverage reliever for the Astros.
