The rant was recorded by WSCR-AM 670 personality Les Grobstein and quickly became infamous. The Chicago Tribune even apologized for printing a quote from the rant in the next day's newspaper.

Despite the controversy, Elia continued his career, managing the Phillies from 1987 to 1988. He also held coaching positions with several other MLB teams, including the Yankees, Mariners, Blue Jays, Rays, and Orioles. In later years, he served as a special assistant for the Dodgers and Braves.
