Orioles Recall Top Prospect Coby Mayo

Coby Mayo’s recall addresses immediate roster needs for the Orioles, who have been plagued by injuries to key players like Jordan Westburg and Colton Cowser. Mayo, a 23-year-old corner infielder, had a brief stint in the majors in 2024 but struggled to make an impact. However, his strong performance in Triple-A this season, particularly against left-handed pitching (.529 with four home runs), has earned him another shot.

The Orioles’ current offensive struggles, especially against lefties, highlight the need for Mayo to step up and contribute. His ability to play both third and first base provides flexibility, although his defense at third base has been described as "fringy."

Mayo’s future with the team hinges on his performance during this stint. If he can translate his Triple-A success to the majors, he could solidify his role and impact his future contractual status. With 148 days remaining in the regular season, Mayo has the opportunity to accrue enough service time to qualify for arbitration after 2027 and free agency after 2030. 

He was recalled due to Ramón Urías being placed on the injured list and to provide a potential offensive boost against left-handed pitching.

He has hit .252 with six home runs and an .869 OPS.

The Orioles hope Mayo can translate his minor league success to the majors and provide a spark to their offense.
