Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera Out with Ankle Fracture, DJ LeMahieu Returns

During the Monday night game against the Seattle Mariners, Oswaldo Cabrera sustained a left ankle fracture on an awkward slide into home plate.

The injury occurred in the ninth inning of the Yankees' 11-5 victory. Cabrera overran the plate and his ankle buckled when he tried to stop. Despite the injury, he managed to tag the plate to score the final run.

Following the game, Cabrera was taken to Harborview Medical Center for evaluation. Initial reports indicated that he would not require emergency surgery. He was visited in the hospital by teammates and coaches and returned to the team hotel later that night. However, Cabrera flew back to New York to meet with a specialist to determine if surgery will be needed. He has been placed on the 10-day injured list.

DJ LeMahieu’s activation comes after an extended absence due to a foot fracture sustained in Spring Training, followed by a calf tweak during his rehab assignment. He had a .444/.500/.593 slash line in his rehab assignment. LeMahieu is expected to return to his natural position at second base, although he may see some starts at third as well.

The Yankees also have options in Oswald Peraza, Jorbit Vivas, and Pablo Reyes to cover the infield.
