Pirates Roster Shuffle: Solak Called Up, Bae Optioned to Minors

The Pirates made the move to bring up Solak just before a game in Philadelphia, aiming to inject some life into their struggling offense. Solak, 30, has been tearing it up in Triple-A, leading the International League in average and ranking among the top hitters in OBP and slugging. He last saw MLB action in 2023 with the Braves and Tigers, but his most significant stint was with the Rangers in 2021, where he hit .242 with 11 homers in 127 games.

Ji Hwan Bae's demotion comes after a brief return to the majors. He played in five games, primarily as a pinch-runner and late-inning replacement. While he showed flashes of speed and scored a couple of runs, his offensive contributions were limited. Bae's overall MLB performance in 2024 has been underwhelming, with a .189/.247/.216 slash line in 29 games. However, he has performed well in Triple-A, slashing .341/.433/.504.

Solak's arrival could provide some flexibility for the Pirates. He is expected to get some playing time at first base, especially against left-handed pitching, and could also see action in left field. His ability to draw walks and limit strikeouts in Triple-A is an encouraging sign for a Pirates team in need of offensive consistency.

The move also resulted in Michael Helman being designated for assignment, a quick exit after being claimed off waivers just days prior. This demonstrates the Pirates' urgency to find solutions and optimize their roster for both short-term gains and long-term evaluation.

Solak was called up due to his impressive performance in Triple-A, where he was hitting for a high average and showing power.

Bae was optioned to Triple-A to get more consistent playing time and further develop his offensive skills.
