The Pirates acquired minor league outfielder Titus Dumitru and cash from the Braves for Hunter Stratton.
Dumitru, a 2024 draft pick, has shown potential in the Braves' minor league system.
Stratton, after recovering from a serious injury last season, will join the Braves' Triple-A affiliate.
Colin Holderman’s rehab assignment has been transferred to Triple-A Indianapolis, signaling progress in his recovery.
Why this matters:: This trade provides both teams with potential benefits. The Pirates gain a young outfielder with upside, while the Braves acquire a reliever with MLB experience to add depth to their system.
The Pirates designated Stratton for assignment last week before trading him to the Braves. Stratton had a tough year with injury. The Braves are transferring Chris Sale to the 60-day IL to make room for Stratton. The Pirates are receiving Dumitru, who batted .231 with High-A Rome this season. He was drafted in the 16th round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft out of New Mexico State University. The Pirates initially called up Stratton this season on April 29, ahead of the series vs. the Chicago Cubs, as they placed Dennis Santana on the Major League Bereavement/Family Medical Emergency List. He made two appearances vs. the Cubs, finishing with 1.2 innings pitched and a 21.60 ERA. On June 21, Pittsburgh recalled Stratton, as they placed left-handed relief pitcher Ryan Borucki on the 15-day injured list. Stratton came in the bottom of the fourth inning vs. the Milwaukee Brewers on June 22. He then allowed three earned runs over his last appearance, as he struggled with control and allowed the Brewers to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Pirates optioned Stratton back to Triple-A on June 24 and then placed him on waivers on June 26, as they signed left-handed pitcher Génesis Cabrera to a Major League contract and needed a spot on the 40-man roster.
