Shohei Ohtani Accused of Sabotaging $240M Hawaii Real Estate Project

A Hawaii real estate investor and broker have filed a lawsuit against Shohei Ohtani and his agent, Nez Balelo, alleging tortious interference and unjust enrichment. The suit claims Ohtani and Balelo conspired to get the plaintiffs fired from a $240 million luxury housing development on the Big Island's Hapuna Coast, known as The Vista at Mauna Kea Resort.

According to the lawsuit, Balelo made increasing demands on developer Kevin J. Hayes Sr. and real estate broker Tomoko Matsumoto before insisting they be dropped from the deal. Ohtani was initially brought in to endorse the project and was even named the "1st Resident" in marketing materials. The development includes 14 houses averaging $17.3 million each.

The plaintiffs allege that Ohtani and Balelo exploited their celebrity status to destabilize their role in the project for financial gain. The suit also claims Ohtani and Balelo attempted to undermine their interests in a second, neighboring venture. A spokesman for CAA Baseball, Balelo's agency, declined to comment.

This controversy adds to Ohtani's recent off-field issues, as his former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was recently sentenced to 57 months in prison for stealing $17 million from Ohtani to cover gambling debts. As the Dodgers continue their season, this legal battle introduces further scrutiny and potential distractions for their star player.
